Eligible Livestock
LRP insurance is available for fed cattle, feeder cattle, and swine producers, and the range of qualifying livestock is fairly broad. For fed cattle and swine, the program includes most market livestock. For feeder cattle, there is a broad range of qualifying weights and types of livestock. For each group of livestock, the owner must expect that the animals meet certain weight and quality standards on the end date. However, if the livestock do not meet those expectations, LRP coverage is not affected nor is the right to an indemnification.
The swine program covers market barrows and gilts expected to weigh 150 - 225 lbs. on a dressed weight basis. Fed cattle qualifying for LRP include steers and heifers that will grade Select or higher, Yield Grade 1 - 3, weighing 1,000 - 1,400 lbs. (live weight basis). Covered feeder cattle are separated into two weight classes: less than 600 lbs. and 600 - 900 lbs. Steers, heifers, and Brahman and dairy breeds can be insured in both weight groups. Additionally, bull calves of any breed expected to weigh less than 600 lbs. when sold can be insured.
Note: LRP has been expanded to include lamb operations. Available through
